BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The Birmingham Botanical Gardens are open today as usual after a suspicious package found at the park Wednesday was deemed safe.

A suspicious package was delivered to the Garden Center addressed to the Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens from a West Coast address, spokesperson Blake Ells said in a release Thursday.

Birmingham firefighters and police responded to the scene and a HAZMAT unit safely removed the package.

"The contents of the package never posed an immediate threat, but no measure was considered too extreme to ensure the safety of visitors to The Gardens or its employees," Ells stated.

The Birmingham fire department was on scene until about 7:25 p.m. The package will be submitted to the FBI for testing. The FBI has taken over the investigation.

Ells said the park remained open yesterday while authorities were on the scene. The gardens are still open under normal hours, dawn until dusk.
