AUBURN, AL (WBRC) -

Auburn University and the city council have announced the final farewell for the historic and beloved Oaks at Toomer's Corner.

After two years of exhaustive efforts to save the iconic trees, the university will remove them April 23, weather permitting. An official with the school says "the only option we have at this point is to remove" the trees.

But fans will have one last chance to roll the oaks following the A-Day football game April 20 during a "Celebrate the Tradition" block party. The celebration will begin at 5 p.m. in the College Street and Magnolia Avenue intersection.

The April 23 removal is tentatively set for 7 a.m.

University of Alabama fan Harvey Updyke is accused of poisoning the trees. Updyke has pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect to charges that include desecrating a venerable object. A judge ruled recently that his trial could be moved from Lee County to Elmore County because Auburn sits in the former county.

Good news for Cullman shoppers: several stores damaged in the March hail storm are set to open in the next couple weeks. The parking lot is still pretty empty, but the store signs are fixed, the roofs have been repaired, and instead of 'closed' signs, there are now signs that say 'coming soon.'
