Ala. methadone clinic pays $95,000 penalty

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - U.S. Attorney's officials say a methadone treatment center has agreed to pay a $95,000 penalty stemming from multiple record-keeping and inventory violations.

Peggy Sanford, spokeswoman for the Northern District of Alabama, says Metro Treatment of Alabama - which does business as Huntsville Metro Treatment Center - was the target of a regulatory investigation between late March and late June of 2012. Officials say they noted the center failed to account for more than 3,400 dosage units of methadone and failed to complete required DEA forms for multiple shipments of methadone.

As part of the settlement agreement, the drug treatment center denies any intentional violation of regulations and says it has changed its record-keeping procedures at the request of the DEA.
