Diamond Pet Foods cat food voluntarily recalled

Two types of cat food sold in Alabama are among the products being voluntarily recalled by Diamond Pet Foods. The company is recalling seven specific cat food products due to low levels of thiamine, or vitamin B1.

These are the recalled Diamond Pet Food products sold in Alabama:

-Diamond Naturals Kitten Formula, 6 oz. samples and 6 pound bag with a "Best by" date of September 30, 2013

-4health All Life Stages Cat Formula, the 5 pound and 18 pound bags with a "Best by" date of August 14, 2013 and August 18, 2013.

Diamond Pet Foods said there have been no complaints about thiamine levels or any other health issues relating to the recalled products. The cat food company tested all of their other products to make sure they had the correct levels of thiamine.

Thiamine is essential for cats to maintain a normal nervous system function, and cats that have eaten food with too-low levels could be at risk for a thiamine deficiency, the company said. Early signs of a thiamine deficiency include decreased appetite, vomiting, weight loss and salivation.

"At Diamond Pet Foods, we have a process where we continuously test our products, and this process allowed us to find the undesired levels of thiamine in some of our cat formulas. Our food safety protocols are designed to provide safe food on a daily basis," Michele Evans, the Diamond Pet Foods Executive Director of Food Safety and Quality Assurance said in a release.
