BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The Birmingham Board of Education has approved a savings plan that includes closing seven schools and laying off 90 workers.

The following schools will be closed:

  • Center Street Middle School
  • Councill K-5
  • Daniel Payne Middle School
  • Hemphill Pre-K-5
  • Lewis Elementary School
  • Norwood K-5
  • North Roebuck Elementary School

As of Tuesday, the BOE proposed that Lewis and Norwood students would consolidate and be housed at the old Kirby Elementary School, which is currently vacant, as long as officials deem it habitable.

After considering community concerns in a series of meetings, the school board has abandoned the plans to consolidate Carver or Woodlawn high schools.

The original savings plan called for closing 7 schools and consolidating those students with others. Several other schools would have become K-6.

Nineteen employees in the central office and 71 employees across the system will be laid off.

Reporter Arielle Clay will have more on this story tonight at 9 and 10.
