Birmingham School Board to vote on school closings

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The Birmingham School Board is expected to vote on a new plan that would consolidate some schools and close six schools.

Originally, seven schools were planned for closure, before changes were made to the plan. The changes come after parents gave their input in three public meetings last week.

The biggest concern was Carver and Woodlawn High Schools becoming 7th - 12th grade. Many parents had concerns about student safety.

On Friday, Superintendent Craig Witherspoon announced his intentions to change some of the recommended changes. The changes Witherspoon is recommending are:

• The reconfiguration of Carver and Woodlawn high schools to become 7th through 12th-grade schools has been removed from the list of recommendations.

• South Hampton Elementary School would become a K-8 school to accommodate the students from Daniel Payne Middle School.

• Lewis Elementary School and Norwood Elementary School would be consolidated in the former Kirby Middle School building.

• Putnam Middle School would remain open.

• Hemphill and Jackson elementary schools would consolidate at Hemphill instead of at Jackson,

• Avondale, Oliver and Barrett elementary schools would remain K-5 schools, and Hudson, Hayes and Inglenook K-8 schools would keep the K-8 configuration.
