Calera considering upping sales tax

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Shoppers in Calera may soon spend more in sales taxes.

On Wednesday night, the Calera City Council proposed increasing the city's portion of the sales tax from 3% to 4% making the total sales tax collected on purchases at 9%.

Calera Finance Director Roy Hadaway says the reason for the increase is because of the economy. He says the city's population has increased, but revenue has gone down over the years, putting a strain on budgets.

The increase will put an estimated $155,000 or more in the city's budget each month. Part of that money would be used to hire more officers and firefighters.

"We'd like to be able to reduce response time with police and fire even more," said Roy Hadaway.

"That's a good thing, 1%. If it's going for protection, good thing," said Jimmy Bearden.

Other capital improvement projects include expanding the Highway 31 bridge over I-65 to help ease congestion. Additional funds would also help complete the new park complex and hire park employees.

Community input meetings would be held before the council votes. The first one is Monday, March 18th at 6:30 p.m. at the city hall.
