Police identify Gate City shooting victim found in wrecked car

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Birmingham police have identified the man killed in a shooting in the Gate City area.

Around 3 p.m. officers responded to a call of a shooting in the Mark's Village housing community. When officers arrived, they found Anatwon Cowans, 23 of Birmingham, unresponsive in a vehicle near Joppa Avenue and Georgia Road. Cowans was transported to UAB and prounounced deceased upon arrival.

Police Sgt. Johnny Williams says police believe Cowans may have been shot at another location, got into the vehicle and tried to drive away, eventually hitting a utility pole.

They have no leads on a suspect. Investigators hope that someone in the community may have seen something and will come forward.
