- UAB Nutritionist Dr. Beth Kitchin joined us this morning with some advice on Mediterranean food! Should you eat more of it? Should add in more olive oil and nuts to your diet? A recent study shows that people who added these important components of a Mediterranean eating style to their diet, they lowered their risk of heart disease.  The lowered risk was a bit overblown in the media and by the researchers themselves - you may have heard that the number of heart attacks could be lowered by 30% - but the actual risk reduction is more like 1%.  Why the discrepancy? Researchers often report relative risk - which just shows the % of reduced risk but not where that risk started. That said, this was a well-designed study that did show at least some benefit of adding in nuts and olive oil and an overall Mediterranean eating style. Also keep in mind that this study was done in people at risk for heart disease but had not been actually diagnosed with it.  Being at risk meant that they either had diabetes or they had three of the following risk factors:  smoking, hypertension, high LDL's, low HDL's, overweight or obesity, or a family history of heart disease. So how did the people on the Mediterranean style diet eat? They ate 4 tablespoons of olive oil a day, 3 servings of nuts a week, 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, 3 servings of fish a week, 3 servings of legumes a week, & 7 glasses of wine a week. So you can see that eating Mediterranean is more than just adding in some wine and olive oil. Mediterranean eaters only eat red meat a couple of times a month - and they don't eat as many solid animal fats as we do. The other point that we all need to thing about is that if we start adding olive oil in at 4 tablespoons a day that's about 500 extra calories and you could gain some weight - definitely not good for heart disease! So if you decide to add in olive oil, make sure you lower some of the other fats in your diet - use less of other oils, butter, margarine, etc!
