Shelby Co. Supt: School resource officers should be in zones, not every school

SHELBY COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

Recent instances of violence at schools have parents concerned for their childrens' safety. In Shelby County, parents have been signing a petition urging the county commission to fund and place sheriff's deputies in each school.

As it turns out, it's not the commission parents have to convince of the plan. Superintendent Randy Fuller says he thinks that deputies should be assigned to zones rather that individual schools. For example, there would be a zone covering Chelsea schools, Columbiana schools and so on.

Parents who attended the commission meeting Monday were taken by surprise and say they will keep fighting to put a deputy in each school.

"A lot of schools, a lot of kids," Heather Mahaffey said. "You need an officer in every school. Not just because of safety...also because the officers get to know the kids and the kids get to know the officers."

Sheriff Chris Curry still supports having a deputy in every school, but says the Sheriff's Office cannot continue to fund them. He plans to meet with Fuller about the issue. The commission has said they will help find additional funding for more school resource officers but it remains to be seen how those deputies will be assigned.
