Research says 1 in 3 has high blood pressure

It seems society is always on the go and popping a frozen meal in the microwave or grabbing a quick sandwich. It has become orthodox for many people and while convenient, the problem is all of the sodium packed inside the food.

"It's estimated that one in three adults in the United States has high blood pressure and that less than 50% of them have it under control," said Registered Dietician Micah Madsen.

Madsen said we as Americans take in an average 3000-4000 milligrams of sodium a day.

That's almost double the recommended amount of 2300.

Madsen said, "Your best bets are planning ahead. You know, making snacks that consist of fruits and nuts. homemade products as opposed to packaged items like chips and popcorn, candy."

A new study by the American Heart Association said reducing salt intake could save a half million Americans from dying premature deaths over a decade. And it's not just the obvious foods like canned soup and boxed dinners that carry a heavy salt content.

People also need to watch out for those hidden flavor boosters.

"Think about condiments...... soy sauce, barbeque sauce, things like that that we add as additional flavor," said Madsen.

Some meats could add to an over abundance of sodium. Madsen said, "my rule of thumb is if they grind it up and put it together in a different shape and call it something else it's probably not good for you."
