GARDENDALE, AL (WBRC) -

Today the city of Gardendale paid tribute to police officers who first responded to a shooting that left a woman dead, a daughter wounded and a Methodist pastor accused of murder.

Rev. Terry Greer of Gardendale Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church is accused of killing his 52-year-old wife Lisa Greer and wounding his daughter, 18-year-old Suzanna Greer, on January 10.

Thursday, two weeks after the shooting, a police star of valor was given to Lt. Marty Brown. Brown broke into the Greer home and led his officers into what many call a dangerous situation.

"I'm very honored to receive such an award, but it was actually the guys behind me that really made it possible. It's the commitment we have to each other, knowing I'm trusted in the back and that we work as a team," Brown said.

Brown was the first to find Green in a bathroom with self-inflicted stab wounds. Brown tried to arrest Greer but the pastor went for Brown's weapon.

"Actually he did, when I removed his hands, he raised up to grab my gun. I had to knock his hands away, do that. Yes," Brown said.

Gardendale Police Chief Mike Walker says his officers acted professionally and calmly in a chaotic scene. Walker presented commendations to other officers.

"Whenever our people do good work, we want to recognize them for it and we try to do a good job of doing that," Walker said.

During the presentation, Walker noted someone on social media that day asked why didn't the officers let Greer die? Walker agreed with another post which said police officers and Christians don't do that.

"No, you wouldn't leave somebody to end their own life," Walker said.

At this time Greer remains hospitalized at UAB, under 24/7 guard from Gardendale police officers. The need for a constant guard is creating a problem for the department with overtime and taking an officer off the street to provide that protection.

Chief Walker jis hoping Greer will be transferred to the Jefferson County Jail by next week.
