Details begin to emerge in apartment complex shooting, fire

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -

Longview Police are continuing to investigate a Tuesday night shooting and fire that were reported within minutes of each other in the same apartment complex.

Around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday night, Longview Police responded to a report of a shooting at Village South Apartments on the 700 block of Green Street in south Longview.

According to a witness, a man and his son were making dinner in an apartment when a man with a gun barged in yelling. The child left the apartment, at which point the shooting occurred.

A short time later a fire was reported at a different building at the same apartment complex. Authorities say they are unsure at this point if the two incidents are related.

Wednesday morning, Fire Marshal Johnny Zackary confirmed that the fire, which was set in the apartment complex's laundry room, was intentionally set. The fire department is working in conjunction with the Longview Police Department in the investigation.

"They were able to keep the fire from spreading to the office and adjoining mechanical room, but there was heavy fire. We believe the fire was intentionally set, but at this time we don't know how it was related to the other incidents at the complex this evening," Zackary said on the scene of the fire Tuesday night.

Longview Police have a suspect for the shooting in mind. He is in the hospital with a wound related to the incident.
