GARDENDALE, AL (WBRC) -

It was just over a week ago that Gardendale pastor Terry Greer allegedly opened fire on his family, killing his wife and wounding his daughter. Police say Greer then stabbed himself.

Friday night, Greer's neighbors came together to hold a candlelight vigil.

Karen White attends Gardendeal-Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church where Greer was the pastor. She like many others came to the vigil to pray for the family, the church, and the community as a whole.

"To hold each other, lift each other up, in a very difficult time. Cause I don't care what neighborhood, what state, this is a shock. We need to touch people and be touched," said White.

Reaching out to others is the main reason that Jennifer Bensko helped organize the vigil. It was her parents who Greer's daughter ran to for help after the shooting.

"It's a time we can come together, and for good to come from something bad that has happened. And we just pray that God gets the glory tonight, that his light shines, and that we know that he's here for us," said Bensko.

Neighbors say since the shooting there has been a lot of tears and a lot of sadness, but Friday evening was about hope and healing.

"I Believe we've come together as a neighborhood. And this really tragic event has brought us together tonight and hopefully will bring us together more as neighbors in the future," said neighbor Doris Moody.

"This is the hard part. That as bad as it is, that God is in control," said White. "We can ask why, why, why all day long. But we have to keep moving forward and I think that this is what this is about."
