WALKER COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

Just a few hours after a winter storm dumped inches of snow in Walker County, the road and travel conditions are rapidly improving.

Around rush hour, traffic was moving at a good pace along Highway 78 and other roadways near Jasper. Earlier in the day, heavy snowfall and ice made I-22 a treacherous place for drivers.

Walker County officials worked several accidents, many on Highways 5 and 269, in the wintry weather. At one point, Sumiton Police closed all roads, but those roads are now open to traffic.

Walker County EMA Director Johnny Burnett said officials had to evacuate kids off of buses that got stuck in the snow. Even with temperatures rising to above freezing, he is urging residents not to travel on the roads unless absolutely necessary.

Jasper City Schools will delay classes until 10 a.m. on Friday. Buses will run at 9 a.m.
