GARDENING - Jimmy Rockett joins us this morning to show us how to care for pansies right now: Jimmy says we are beginning to have grey, cloudy cold weather, and many times, pansies will have grey mold, this is on the blooms and it will spread thru out to other pansies in the beds or pots. Jimmy says to just reach down the spent flower bloom, follow the stem back to the plant and 'pinch the stem' off. Once you get all spent blooms, spray with a fungicide that is labeled for grey mold and pansies. Lowes, Home Depot and your independent garden centers should have it in stock. For feeding pansies, Jimmy recommends the turkey poop and liquid hastagrow fertilizers. They are organic compounds that feed the soil which in turns feed the plants. However, just know, when the temperatures are 45 degrees, the plants don't take up much fertilizer unless you use a food that is specifically for cold weather feed. Jimmy says that deadheading your pansies weekly will really pay off and you will enjoy the blooms much longer thru this winter time. For more information, call Jimmy at (205) 981-1151, email him at email@example.com, or visit www.rockettsbugjuicegardens.com.
