Boil water alert for Jefferson County lifted

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The boil water alert issued for thousands of people in west Jefferson County has been lifted. The Birmingham Water Works Board officially ended the alert at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 4.

The boil order went into effect Wednesday night for communities west of Highway 78 due to a water main break in a 16-inch pipe. Several areas in the western part of the water works system experienced a loss in water pressure caused by the damage.

"Rigorous testing has been conducted to verify the safety of the drinking water, and all bacteriological samples from the boil water alert area have come back negative. The water is safe to drink throughout the entire service area, and the water quality will be monitored continually," the BWWB said in a release issued Friday morning.

All of the communities affected by the alert may now resume normal operations, the BWWB says.
