Gadsden begins speeding crackdown in residential areas

A speeding crackdown is underway in Gadsden. Police are trying to get drivers to slowdown in residential areas often used as shortcuts.

One area is Padenreich Avenue in east Gadsden near Gadsden State Community College. Recently, the city council reduced the speed limit to 25 miles per hour. Police say they are concerned about speeding since so many elderly people and children live in that area.

"But if you notice as you go down through there, every one of the houses has a driveway. And they have to enter Padenreich," said Lt. Wayne Keener with the Gadsden Police Department. "So, the faster and the more traffic you've got, makes it more difficult for that person that lives in that area to get out, secondly, more dangerous for them."

Gadsden police also plan similar patrols for a few other places including south Eleventh Street and east Broad Street.
