HOME HOW TO - The main purpose for interior moulding is to create separation or breaks in your wall from floor to ceiling. The wider or more decorative the moulding, the more character you add to the room. The following are the most commonly used moulding profiles, though each can come in a range of decorative profiles:
1. Crown moulding- Ties the wall and ceiling together and also hides places where paint doesn't quite meet the ceiling. Here we've added a cove for added decoration.
2. Chair Railing- Divides a wall horizontally and helps eliminate the feeling of emptiness or serves as a perimeter trim for wainscot. Again this is just one style that you can use.
3. Baseboards- Ties the wall to the floor while covering up such eyesores as gaps between the floor and the wall. Here we've added a base shoe to add more depth, making the moulding appear to be thicker.
4. Casing- This moulding is used to fill the gap between a window and wall or a door and wall. What we've shown here is a decorative fluted casing with a rosette block for trim.
The style or type of moulding you use should always coordinate with the style and size of your home, since you want your moulding to enrich the look of your home, not overpower it. You can add a lot by doing simple things like adding picture boxes like we have here (refer to product board).
To install the types of moulding you will need the following tools and supplies: paintbrush, sandpaper, paint primer, miter saw, nail gun or hammer and nail punch, pencil and tape measure, nails, wood putty and putty knife, caulk, & safety glasses.
Though different types of moulding have some special steps for installation, the following steps are required for most all types.
