Local business owners concerned over fiscal cliff debate

The fiscal cliff debate has some local small business owners, uncertain of their future.

Tealla Stewart owns a store in Vestavia Hills. She has been in business for 22 years and survived the recession in 2008 and 2009, which were two of her toughest years.

Stewart says her number one concern now is for her employees. They will see a reduced take-home pay because social security taxes will go up about 2% for most workers. Stewart also worries that the damage from all of the fiscal cliff talk could hurt business.

"In 2012, we saw a greatly increased consumer confidence and I would really to hate to see that go backwards at this time," said Stewart. "I think right now it's a wait-and-see kind of thing. None of us can tell at this time how it's going to affect us."

Stewart says her plan to move forward is to continue to offer great merchandise and customer service.
