Alabama state troopers began extra patrols Friday evening on Alabama highways for the New Year's holiday.

Trooper Curtis Summerville says they're looking out for lead footed drivers, because speeding is still the number one cause of fatal crashes in our state. Troopers will also be looking for people driving under the influence, following too closely and those not buckled up.

Summerville says have a plan for getting home if you're going out to celebrate the new year.

"We want to encourage people if you're out driving, we want you to have a good time, but have a plan. Have a course of action. If you're gonna go somewhere, you're gonna consume alcohol, make sure you got a designated driver or have a place to stay, have a plan before you get there," he said.

The extra patrols on Alabama's highways continue to New Year's Day. There will also be unmarked trooper vehicles making stops during this time.
