BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The Jefferson County Coroner's Office has identified one of the victims of a fatal house fire that happened early Tuesday morning.

The coroner's office says Margaret Jean Carroll, 56, died in the blaze. The other person, a male, has not yet been identified.

Birmingham firefighters were called to the Collegeville house on 30th Court North shortly before 1 a.m. Tuesday. After containing the fire they discovered the victims. Their deaths  have shocked neighbors.

"It nearly killed me to have to go find her daughter this mornign to tell that child her mother had gotten burned up in that house. My head is still hurting. It took a lot out of me," Betty Powe said.

Power lives across the street from the house.

"[Carroll] was a nice, quiet neighbor and she more or less kept to herself. She went to stay with her daughters. She would stay from one to the next," Powe said.

Birmingham Fire Marshall and Battalion Chief C.W. Mardis says their preliminary investigation points to a space heater as the cause of the deadly fire.

"The main thing about space heaters, they are a temporary source. They are not intended to be used for extended periods of time such as overnight," Mardis said.

Mardis says space heaters should be used for a limited time and kept at least three feet away from anything flammable.
