PIEDMONT, AL (WBRC) -

Investigators with the Calhoun County Sheriff's Department have identified human remains found in Piedmont as Carla Michelle Fuqua

Fuqua was last seen on October 29, 2009.  Her death is being treated as a homicide.

The skeletal remains were found Tuesday night in a heavily wooded area off Highway 21 North in Piedmont after investigators received a tip. Dental records were used to make the identification.

Family and friends have gathered at Carla's mother's house. Darlene Cook says that when authorities first came to her this week to tell her about the discovery of the remains, she didn't think they could be Carla.

Even after the identification, she cannot believe the news.

"I never prepared myself that it would end like this. I never prepared Justin [Carla's son] that it would end like this. I blame myself to a certain degree…if I had of I might have given up on some of the hope...I had faith that she would be here," Cook said.

Cook says the family plans to give Carla a proper burial and they hope to hold a vigil soon for her.

Investigators from the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office, District Attorney Brian McVeigh, Piedmont Police, the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force and the Alabama Bureau of Investigations are working in conjunction on this case.

If you have any information in the case, you are urged to call the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office.
