(RNN) - Prince William and Kate Middleton announced Monday they are expecting their first child.
"Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Cambridge is expecting a baby," the palace said in a statement. "The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Harry and members of both families are delighted with the news."
The Duchess, 30, was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in Central London with acute morning sickness, according to CNN. The pregnancy has not passed the 12 week point and Monday's announcement was prompted by the Duchess's medical condition.
It's being said with the pregnancy being in its early stages, Kate is expected to stay in the hospital for several days.
"As the pregnancy is in its very early stages, Her Royal Highness is expected to stay in hospital for several days and will require a period of rest thereafter," the statement said.
There is no detail about when the baby was due.
The announcement follows recent tabloids of close-ups of Middleton's stomach for any indication of a baby bump.
Baby rumors and speculations began almost immediately after the couple said, "I do."
"I'm delighted by the news that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expecting a baby," Prime Minister David Cameron said on Twitter. "They will make wonderful parents."
The Duke and Duchess exchanged vows in Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011.
Royal fanatics camped outside the church for hours to reserve for themselves the most exclusive glimpses of the wedding procession. According to media reports, an estimated worldwide audience of 2 billion watched the wedding via television and live streams on the internet.
The couple met during their freshman year at Scotland's University of St. Andrews in 2001 and became engaged in Oct. 2010 in Kenya, East Africa, during a 10-day trip.
The baby will be the Queen's third great-grandchild.
