BBB -David Smitherman with the Better Business Bureau joined us this morning to explain how to protect yourself from holiday scams! Every year, thousands of shoppers fall victim to the holiday deals that seem too good to be true, and the bogus charity pleas that pull at the heart strings. This holiday season, BBB urges consumers to take the following tips into consideration before doing their holiday shopping and making charity donations: Always check a business's BBB Business Review at before making a purchase in the store or online.  If you shop Craigslist or other free bulletin board sites, look for local sellers and conduct transactions in person. Don't let yourself get bogged down in purchases or lose track of your wallet.  Always research charities with BBB before you give. BETH K - UAB Nutrtionist Dr. Beth Kitchin joined us this morning with some surprising nutrition facts!
1. Add Fat for Better Beta-Carotene Absorption. Studies show that very little beta-carotene gets absorbed into your bloodstream without fat! So ditch the fat-free dressing and add oil and vinegar or avocado to your salad, eat your carrots dipped in peanut butter or a little ranch dressing, sautee your broccoli in olive or canola oil.  Don't overdo it - you don't need to drench your broccoli in velveeta but eating a mix of nutrients at each meal is important.

2. Eating Dairy Foods May Help with Weight Control. Many people - particularly women - ditch the dairy for weight control. But, studies show that when people include dairy foods, it actually helps them lose weight - and possibly even a little more around the waist.  It's not going to melt the pounds away, but if you like milk, cheese, and yogurt, don't give it up for weight loss
3. Drinking Milk Can Lower Your Risk of Kidney Stones. It seems counter-intuitive but calcium stones in the kidneys can actually be reduced by eating and drinking dairy foods. That's because calcium stones are produced when your body uses calcium to bind up oxalates in the kidneys. When you get calcium in dairy foods, it blocks up the oxalates in your intestines so they don't end up in the kidneys.

4. You Don't Need to Drink 8 Cups of Water a Day! Don't get me wrong - you need to replenish fluids - and most of us lose about 8 cups a day. But you don't need to replace all of that with pure water. Milk, juice, and even sodas, tea and coffee actually replace some of our lost fluids. Yup, even caffeinated beverages replace some lost fluids. The best indicator of your hydration status is your urine. If it is pale yellow to clear - then you are well hydrated!


ALYS STEPHENS CENTER NEW SEASON - Alabama's own Patterson Hood, singer-songwriter Lucinda Williams, legendary blues guitarist Buddy Guy, R&B king Brian McKnight, comedian Gallagher and his "Last Smash" tour, and singer Aaron Neville will grace 'UABs Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center <> in 2013.  This season the Alys Stephens Center also will pair artists audiences know and love to create evenings of unforgettable music and art. These dynamic duos will include Chick Corea and Gary Burton with Harlem String Quartet; Mary Chapin Carpenter and Shawn Colvin; Preservation Hall Jazz Band and The Del McCoury Band; and the Viva Health Starlight Gala featuring Amy Grant and Vince Gill.
