BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute held a sneak peek Friday of some of the events being planned to mark the 50th anniversary of a pivotal year in the civil rights movement: 1963.

In all, 50 special events will take place throughout 2013. They range from a commemoration of the 16th Street Church bombing, to viewings of documentaries.

Area leaders say opening these activities to the public is a way to bring unity back to the area.

"It starts with those people of good will in '63 and it's incumbent for us to journey where we are now and to include the Hispanics, the Latinos, everyone who believes in freedom we want them to join us under this big tent," Hezekiah Jackson, President of the NAACP's Metro Birmingham Branch, said.

The events begin in January. To search the events, please visit the BCRI's calendar page: http://www.bcri.org/events_activities/calendar/index.html.
