ALDOT meeting will discuss 280 congestion

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The Alabama Department of Transportation will hold a meeting Monday night to discuss the issue of congestion on Highway 280 from Hollywood Boulevard to Doug Baker Boulevard. It will be at the Cahaba Grand Conference Center from 4-7 p.m.

Governor Robert Bentley recently suggested smarter traffic signals as a cost effective way to ease traffic troubles. The new lights would use real-time data from sensors and computers to decide how long to leave lights green. He says talks of an elevated highway are too expensive.

Brian Davis with ALDOT says that the proposed solution involves eliminating or changing traffic lights at 26 different intersections.

"At these 26 different intersections we saw problematic things that could be fixed easily," Davis said. "We set up a project that we think we can implement in spring 2013."

Davis says this $15 million proposal can be easily implemented because few utilities will have to be relocated and no right of way has to be purchased.

"We felt like we could make a major impact on 280 by fixing a lot of little things up and down the corridor," Davis said.
