The following is an editorial from FOX6 WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Tuesday, November 13, 2012:
I've never seen our country more divided! The results of this election have caused folks on both sides to become more "dug in". You know, if our country's economy was on more solid footing…if we didn't have the so-called fiscal cliff in our face…we might have the luxury of standing in our respective corners, staring each other down. But, Congress has just 16 working days to deal with the myriad of issues facing us.
It's stunning, isn't it, that they had the last three years to work through this labyrinth and have chosen not to. If this situation goes unresolved, in the New Year, the Budget Control Act of 2011 goes into effect, causing us to face the potential loss of millions of jobs and another deep recession with increased taxes, deep cuts in defense spending and Medicare, and a multitude of other programs important to families.
At this point in my life, I share the concerns of many of my generation. I worry about the viability of Social Security, the cost of health care, the safety and security of our country and my ability to retire after a lifetime of work...to spend time with my family.
Having said that...why I want you in Washington to come together and talk are three reasons more important than my concerns for myself...Cole, Meghan and McKenna...my grandchildren. What will their short-term and long-term futures be, if we don't do the work necessary to find a workable compromise? What do you think?
