JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

The next couple of days could be important for Jefferson County's efforts to get out of bankruptcy.

Wednesday, Jefferson County Commission President David Carrington and County Commissioner Jimmie Stephens flew to Los Angeles to meet with some of the county's major creditors. This comes one week after the commission voted to raise sewer rates for the first time in four years

"The key element of this week's meeting is what is the number? Not the percentage increase but what will be settle for? What can we live with? What can they live with?" Carrington said.

The commissioners must come back and work with the rest of the commission to develop their final plan of adjustment to get out of bankruptcy. Carrington says they are due to fly back Friday but they will stay if more talks are necessary.
