BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Veterans are being saluted in Birmingham. Birmingham actually has the oldest Veterans Day recognition in the country. Celebrations started here seven years before becoming a national holiday in 1954.

Raymond Weeks was from Ensley. He was also a World War II veteran who was not happy with what he saw when veterans came back from the war. Weeks met with Dwight Eisenhower, who was a general at the time. Several years after that conversation, in 1954, President Eisenhower signed into law a national holiday for veterans.

Today, not only do we celebrate Veterans Day in Birmingham, but we honor Raymond Weeks. There is a monument across from Boutwell Auditorium dedicated to Weeks. On Sunday Weeks' daughters attended a special ceremony for their father and helped lay one of the wreaths.

The tradition has been taking place in Birmingham for 65 years now.

In Tuscaloosa, crews are getting ready for a big Veterans Day program there. The ceremony will include remarks from Alabama Governor Robert Bentley and other state leaders.
