BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The Birmingham Board of Education has chosen a new member to fill a vacant seat. The school board voted in Carol Clarke as the newest member Thursday night.

In the board's first vote, candidates Clarke and Robert Walker tied with four votes each. Then board members voted again and Virginia Volker changed her vote. Clarke won the District 4 seat in a 5-3 vote.

Clarke is from Birmingham and lives in Norwood. She works in purchasing with Region's Financial .

From 2000 to 2008 she worked with the City of Birmingham in charge of capital projects and economic development.

Despite the challenges within the school system, she says she wanted to be a part of the board.

Clarke believes the school system has a lot of potential.

Clarke fills the position left empty by board president Edward Maddox. He stepped down after pleading guilty to two counts of ethics violations last month.

When the new hire is in place, the board will vote on a new president. The school board has said it hopes to have a new leader in place by November 15.
