ETOWAH COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

Sardis Police Chief James Harp says he was nearly hit by a suspect fleeing in a vehicle today after responding to a robbery call.

Witnesses say that the suspect asked about taking old bed rails because he said had just gotten out of prison and needed a bed. A homeowner told the suspect he could have the rails.

Witnesses say the suspect acted as though he was going to pull his car around to get the rails, but in fact drove then his vehicle to the end of the dead end street. The homeowner became concerned after the suspect didn't return for the bed rails and thought he might be breaking into a house at the end of the street. He called police.

Harp says that he made entry into the home and saw the suspect exit through the year of the house and get into his car. Harp tried to pull him out of the car but the man was able to get inside.

Harp says the suspect then drove the car towards him. Harp says he fired five shots to disable the car. Three hit a back tire, a fourth hit the bumper and the fifth missed.

Harp says the suspect didn't make it far on the flat tire. The suspect disappeared on foot into some nearby woods and has not been located as of late Thursday afternoon.

Harp says the car driven by the suspect had a tag that matches another vehicle and says the car might be stolen. The suspect's identity has not been released pending his apprehension.
