Birmingham NAACP offering free rides to voters

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

One group trying to help with voter turnout is the NAACP. The Birmingham branch is offering free rides to precincts all over Jefferson County.

Terry Collins with the NAACP says volunteers are donating their time and gas to shuttle voters to and from their polling place. They stress that the service is non-partisan.

Drivers are not interested in who you are voting for. They just want to encourage residents to exercise their right to vote.

"There are a lot of voters who just don't have rides. I had a gentleman call a few minutes ago, indicated he was in a wheelchair and going to need a van to take to poll. Going to make arrangements to see that that happens," said Collins.

For a ride, call the NAACP office at: 205-714-5860 or go to the 'Seen on TV' section of MyFoxAL.com for a list of specific areas of the county.

Polls are open from seven to seven today. Don't forget to bring your ID.
