TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) -

The University of Alabama trustees have named Dr. Judy Bonner the 38th President of the university. She is the first woman to serve in this position.

The nomination and unanimous vote occurred today at a specially called meeting in the wake of Dr. Guy Bailey's resignation as university president Oct. 31.

Dr. Bonner previously served Executive Vice President and Provost of the university and as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. She also acted as interim president for about seven months before Dr. Bailey took his post as president in September 2012.

Bonner tells FOX6 News that she was interested in the job when trustees first sought a replacement for Robert Witt earlier this year. But when Witt, now chancellor of the university system, approached her about the job full time, she says she had a change of heart.

Bonner says she hopes to serve as a role model to others.

Dr. Bonner released the following statement shortly after Thursday's vote:

It is with great pleasure that I accept the position of president of The University of Alabama. I am looking forward to working with the Board of Trustees, the Chancellor and our students, faculty and staff as we continue to build on the progress and momentum that have led our University to such unprecedented success. We have so much to be proud of and so much to look forward to and, together with our alumni, fans, friends and supporters, we will remain committed to excellence and quality in everything we do.

University of Alabama System Chancellor Dr. Robert E. Witt released this statement regarding Dr. Bonner's election:

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Judy Bonner has been unanimously elected president of The University of Alabama effective immediately.

Having had the pleasure of working with Dr. Bonner for the last ten years, I can say firsthand that she is one of the most intelligent, well-focused and forward-thinking academic administrators in the nation. She began her career at the Capstone in 1981 and has achieved the highest measure of excellence as a faculty member, department chair, dean, executive vice president and provost, and most recently as interim president.

Please join me in congratulating President Bonner on her election. She is a tremendous asset to The University of Alabama, The University of Alabama System, and the state of Alabama.

Big weather changes will be affecting our weather in the week ahead but today sunshine remains along with temperatures a few degrees below average for both this afternoon and Sunday. We continue to see increasing clouds through tonight with overnight lows early tomorrow morning in the 32-39 degree range as the next rain maker approaches later in the day. The first rain may approach during the pre-dawn hours in Northwest Alabama but these will only be a few isolated showers. An area of...More >>
