BETH K - Dr. Beth Kitchin joined us with a look at caffeine and your kids. The recent lawsuit filed against the company that makes Monster Energy drinks has sparked new interest in caffeine, energy drinks, and kids. But medical experts have been recommending against caffeine for children and adolescents for quite a while. The Institute of Medicine published a report in 2007 that recommended that the use of energy drinks in all students in schools - even athletes - be prohibited from using energy drinks at school and that caffeinated drinks should not be sold in schools. Over a year ago in May of 2011, the American Academy of Pediatrics published a report in the journal Pediatrics questioning the appropriateness of energy drinks and sports drinks for children and adolescents. While research has found that caffeine can boost performance in adults, it has not been studied in children and adolescents. caffeine increases: heart rate, blood pressure (short term), attentiveness, anxiety in people with anxiety disorders, & sleeplessness in some people. People who have heart disease, may be more sensitive to caffeine. Energy drinks often contain high levels of caffeine - often higher than sodas. Some more than 500 mg in a can (the cans are often big!). In adults, a reasonable amount of caffeine is 200 to 300 mg a day. Caffeine Count in Typical Drinks: 1 cup of coffee (8 ounces): 120 mg; 1 cup of hot tea (6 ounces): 40 mg; 1 can of Coke: 46 mg; 1 can of Mountain Dew:  54 mg; & 1.55 ounce chocolate bar: 10 mg. Energy Drink Caffeine Count: 1 can Red Bull (8.4 ounces) = 80 mg; 1 can Monster Energy (16 ounce can) = 160 mg; Mega Monster Energy Drink (24 ounces) = 240 mg; & Rage Inferno (24 ounces) = 375 mg. But one of the big problems is that they often don't put caffeine levels on the label - because they don't have to. Certain things do have to be on food labels but caffeine is not one of them. If you look on the Monster Energy label it just says "energy blend" which includes sugar, an amino acid, and several forms of caffeine - and then just gives a total of 2500 mg. so you don't know how much of that is actually caffeine. Others do show the caffeine count.  The Bottom Line: children and adolescents should not be drinking caffeinated beverage. Energy drinks are basically expensive sugar water with caffeine added.
