BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

City leaders and media were able to take a hard hat tour of the Birmingham Barons stadium construction site Wednesday.

Construction began on the $64 million-project in February. In the meantime, a 20 foot-deep bowl was dug to accomodate the field and FOX6 News reporter Vanessa Araiza reported that workers have begun construction on portions of the stadium seating, press box, concourse and park club.

Developer Robert Simon says that the project is on time and on budget for the 2013 season.

"The parkside district that we've now come to call it is going to flourish and I think it's a real game changer for Birmingham," Simon says.

Mayor William Bell also sees how the 8,500-seat stadium is already helping revitalize the area.

"People are starting to invest in properties around here for further development and it's going to be an economic engine to really tie this entire area," Bell says.

And with over 200 construction workers on the project, it's creating jobs as well. Bell says once the stadium is complete around 100 people will work the games.

"The whole goal in the plan was for it to not just be an economic benefit for this area but to spark growth and opportunity throughout the city of Birmingham," Bell says.

As a manager at Good People Brewing Company, Stephano Daneri is already seeing that growth.

"Business has already sky-rocketed. People have been really interested with the progress of the stadium," he says.

Daneri only sees the bar and the area getting better once the stadium opens for play.

"I thinks it's going to be tremendous. This whole area is going to get revamped, not just us," he says. "New businesses will come in. This whole place will look really good."
