BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

A construction project at the Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport is on schedule.

Currently, anyone who flies out of the Birmingham airport can only go through one terminal, Terminal C. Once this project is complete, passengers will be able to use terminals A and B also.

The $201 million dollar expansion will bring terminals A and B up to code based on new TSA requirements passed after September 11.

The expansion is being done in two phases. The first phase will be finished in December 2012 and will open in January or February of 2013. It will include 13 new gates, new ticketing counters, a new security checkpoint area and a new baggage claim area.

Al Denson, president and CEO of the airport, says this expansion is something the community can be proud of.

"I'm very excited about the progress we have made on this project. At the present time we are under budget - within budget - and on schedule and that is a major accomplishment," Denson said.

This project is renovating 420,000 square feet of the airport. That number includes the second phase of the project, which will be finished in spring 2014.
