BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The UAB Dental school took a break from their patients today to raise awareness for breast cancer. The 4th annual Cake off for a cure raised a grand total of $1,300, which will be donated directly within the UAB network for breast cancer research.

"We felt it was really important to keep the money inside our community this year," said 4th year dental student Susanna Pischek. "We all know from the dental side how much dental need there is, so we really (wanted) to contribute back."

UAB dental students, faculty and residents' cakes were judged based on taste, presentation and creativity, then awarded for various categories. The event had over 300 visitors and 50 cakes--double the amount that was entered in last year's contest.

"It's been a packed house," said 1st year resident Ken Randall. "The cakes went so fast. It was awesome to see. People talk about this event all year long. I was excited to finally get to come try out all the cakes for myself."
