CORDOVA, AL (WBRC) -

Cordova police have released more information about the robbery that led to a triple fatal wreck in north Birmingham. The suspects' vehicle slammed into another car that was waiting at a red light, killing a young family of three inside.

The two robbery suspects abandoned their vehicle after the wreck Monday night and eluded law enforcement for nearly a day. Officials confirmed that the two suspects were in custody Tuesday evening. They could face capital murder charges in Birmingham and attempted murder charges in Cordova.

Cordova Police Chief Kenneth Bobo says the suspects will be charged with robbery and assault at the very least, but they could be charged with attempted murder based on the victim's injuries.

Chief Bobo says the robbery happened Monday night in the 500 block of Long Avenue, a residential community of Benchfield in Cordova. A 77-year-old man and his wife returned to their home, pulled into the driveway and stopped to pick up their trash can. A suspect approached the man and demanded his wallet. The man refused, so the suspects hit him in the head with a gun, according to Bobo.

The suspects also approached the victim's wife and demanded her purse. She didn't have a purse, so the suspects fled with only the man's wallet. A neighbor heard the commotion and called 911, according to Bobo.

The 77-year-old victim was treated at Walker Baptist Hospital for his head injury and had about five stitches put in. The man's wallet was later recovered on Highway 269 in Adamsville. Chief Bobo says the victim didn't have any cash inside the wallet.

Chief Bobo says the suspects fled in a white SUV. The suspects fled south through Dora and Adamsville and eventually crashed into a car at the intersection of Birmingport Road and Minor Parkway.

All three people in the car, a mother, father and 10-month-old baby, died at the scene. The suspects fled and a manhunt ensued. The two robbery suspects were eventually taken into custody Tuesday afternoon. A third person was also arrested for helping one of the suspects hide.

Fox 6 has confirmed the identities of the suspects, but our policy is to not release their names until they are formally charged. Birmingham police have not yet charged the suspects and Cordova police say they won't charge them until tomorrow.
