A Shelby County Schools spokesperson said Thursday that five Montevallo Elementary Schools classes will be relocated during mold cleanup at the school.

Five classes will temporarily move to portable classrooms, according to a press release from Cindy Warner. Deputy Superintendent Tom Ferguson announced the decision Thursday after results from an air quality test that was conducted by ERG Environmental.

One classroom reportedly contain Stachybotrys mold spores, which are caused by moisture. This room needs additional cleanup and four nearby rooms are being relocated as a precaution and because of their proximity to the affected classroom.

"We immediately removed students today from this one classroom and relocated them to another area of the building," Ferguson said in the press release. "We also have ordered five portable classrooms that will be delivered tomorrow. We hope that those portables will be set up and ready to use by Monday or Tuesday."

School officials believe that recent heavy rainfall has caused a drainage problem which led to the moisture issue. Ferguson said that a construction project has been approved to permanently correct the drainage problem.

Once the cleanup, construction and final air quality tests have been completed, students will move back into their permanent classrooms.

Additional cleanup will be conducted in three classrooms, the kitchen, lunchroom and gym areas after mushroom mold spores were discovered. School officials say this type of spore typically causes no health issues and is likely the result of doors and windows left open to the elements.

FOX6 News Reporter Sherea Harris spoke with Ferguson and concerned parents Sept. 21 on this issue. At the time, Ferguson said that SERVPRO had been working at the school to clean the classrooms and air vents.
