Good Day Alabama for September 18, 2012

Here is what you saw on Good Day Alabama for September 18, 2012:

MONEY TUESDAY - Stewart Welch joined us with some advice on retirement strategies for 40-somethings.  First, determine your 'number'.  How much capital do you need to accumulate between now and your target retirement date?  When people do this exercise, most are shocked at how much money they'll need to be able to maintain a similar lifestyle during their retirement years (hint: your number is in the millions!).  For a nifty retirement calculator, visit; click on the 'Resources' tab; then 'Links' and 'Retirement Calculator'.  Have multiple types of investment accounts.  Retirement accounts are great for accumulating wealth during your working years because you typically get a tax deduction for your contributions and earnings grow tax deferred.  However, during retirement, your withdrawals are fully taxed as ordinary income.   For us, the perfect retirement client is one who has a lot of money in both a traditional retirement account and a personal investment account.  That way we get to choose where to pull money from and in doing so, can exercise a lot of control over the income taxes we pay in any given year.  Start with the Roth IRA.  While your contributions are not tax deductible, withdrawals at retirement are 100% income tax free.  If you don't qualify to contribute to a Roth IRA because you make too much money, you can invest in a non-deductible IRA and immediately 'convert' it to a Roth IRA.  There will be no income tax implications unless you already have a traditional tax-deductible IRA account.  Be sure to work with your CPA.  Beyond the Roth IRA, set up a personal investment account using no-load mutual funds, exchange traded funds (ETFs) or individual stocks. Focus on debt reduction.  In most cases, when working with clients, one goal is to be debt free, including home mortgage, by retirement.  You'd be amazed at how much less financial-related stress there is if there's no debt. It boosts confidence and gives you the sense that you can withstand any financial crisis. For more information, visit

- Governor Bentley signed Alabama's new concussion law earlier this month. The Alabama Statewide Sports Concussion Taskforce (ASCT), chaired by Dr. Joe Ackerson, helped to write and sponsored this important legislation, along with State Representative Paul Demarco, State Representative Ron Johnson, State Senator Greg Reed, and Steve Savarese, director of the Alabama High School Athletic Association. Dr. Ackerson and the ASCT, which is part of the Alabama Statewide Head Injury Taskforce, have been working since 2007 to reduce the incidence and morbidity associated with sports-related concussion. It has been estimated that up to 3.8 million sports- and recreation-related traumatic brain injuries occur in the United States yearly with the highest rates of emergency department visits for sports concussion occurring for young people from ages 10 to 19. Youth athletes appear to be especially vulnerable to the effects of concussion, including cognitive difficulties such as memory and attention problems. Dr. Ackerson is optimistic that most of the adverse long-term consequences of concussion can be avoided by proper identification of the injury when it occurs followed by immediate physical and mental rest along with proper medical management. The new law helps to ensure this happens by requiring all athletic organizations to: provide information on sports concussions to all athletic participants and their families; ensure that all coaches have training in the recognition of concussions; and immediately remove a participant suspected of having a concussion from participation and not allow him/her to return until cleared by a physician. Concussion symptoms include confusion, balance problems, difficulty concentrating, nausea/vomiting, feeling "in a fog", & pressure in the head.

WILDLIFE EXPERT - Stuart R. Goldsby is the Regional Hunter Education Coordinator for Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries.  He discussed "wild calls." He showed us wildlife calls to use in the field to attract, or evoke a response from "other" wildlife such as duck calls, goose calls, owl, deer, crow, and others. In the spirit of "Fair Chase Hunting", the hunter is attempting to defeat the senses of the animals in pursuit. To attract them into gun or bow range by use of an attractant call, response call for location, Calls and Calling have become big business in the hunting industry and calling an integral part of the hunting experience. Hunter Education Certification and the Youth Dove Hunt program.
