Birmingham looks into food trucks regulations

A controversial new set of rules for Birmingham food trucks is going back to the negotiating table at city hall.

After a lot of discussion Tuesday, the council decided to put the food trucks ordinance back into committee of the whole sometime later this month.

The new rules would put limits on where food trucks can set up, when they can operate, and increase the amount of fees they have to pay to operate.

Food truck owners today said they want to get along with brick-and-mortar restaurants who see them as a threat, but don't think they should be discriminated against.

"All the food trucks are asking for is fairness in regulation," said 1 food truck owner. "While the city has the right to regulate city streets and other public right of ways for city business, it does not have the right to pick and choose which businesses to favor over other businesses."

"The main thing our committee is trying to do is balance it from a fairness standpoint so that one entity does not have an advantage over another entity," Councilwoman Valerie Abbott said.

Council members today said it may be another month before the final version of this plan is ready for a vote.
