Texas A&M bounces back with win over SMU

DALLAS (RNN) – Texas A&M showed no side effects from the loss in their SEC opener last week, rolling up 605 yards Saturday in a 48-3 win over SMU.

Johnny Manziel only needed three quarters to account for 418 total yards and six touchdowns. He threw four touchdowns and 294 passing yards, a school record for freshmen. He ran for 124 yards and two more scores on 13 carries.

The Aggies (1-1) held the Mustangs to a 25-yard field goal by Chase Hover.

Uzoma Nwachukwu caught two touchdowns for the Aggies, and Mike Evans added 123 receiving yards.

Texas A&M has not lost a game to SMU (1-2) since 1984 and are 11-0-1 in that time. The two teams were former rivals when they were members of the Southwest Conference.

Zach Line had his 17th career 100-yard game for the Mustangs and finished the night with 104 yards.

Texas A&M scored 20 unanswered points to close put the first half, and it would have been 21 had Margus Hunt not blocked the extra point on the Aggies' second TD of the game. Hunt kept the Aggies from going ahead 14-0 after Manziel's 48-yard run for a score. Hunt is second in NCAA history with 16 blocked kicks and holds the record for blocked field goals with nine.

Manziel escaped pressure and hit Kenric McNeal for a 42-yard score on the Aggies' first drive of the second half. Manziel added another running TD and a scoring pass to Nwachukwu in the third quarter before giving way to backup Jameill Showers.

Texas A&M rebounded after a slow start that included a missed 23-yard field goal by Taylor Bertolet, three punts in the first quarter and a failed fourth-down conversion inside SMU's territory.

LSU went back to work this week in preparation for the Citrus Bowl against Notre Dame. A win would be nice, but this is also a chance to get some freshman playing time to get ready for 2018. Well it'll come in practice only. "Those guys will get more reps. So I'll give them a couple of more reps at the end of a team period. It's sending the wrong message to our football team.
