MOODY, AL (WBRC) -

Charges against a man police say randomly fired shots at passing cars in Moody Tuesday night have been upgraded to include attempted murder.

Suspect Matthew Giles, 19, is charged with two counts of attempted murder and two counts of shooting into an occupied vehicle, a class B felony. Police say Giles is from the Brompton area of Leeds.

The incident started around 9 p.m. Tuesday near the Chevron on Highway 78 close to the Brompton exit off Interstate 20. Police say Giles sat on his four wheeler at a stop sign across the street about 500 feet from the gas station and randomly shot at passing vehicles. The bullets he fired didn't hit anyone, but damaged at least two cars.

One of the drivers, named Murray Scroggins, said he heard gunshots as he approached a stop sign, then saw the shooter standing on the side of the road. Scroggins said the bullet that struck his car hit the drivers' side, close to his head.

Moody and Odenville police, along with St. Clair County sheriff's deputies, used search dogs during a four-hour manhunt Monday night.

As authorities were searching, a witness stopped at the gas station and told police earlier in the evening he saw Giles on his four wheeler sitting on the side of the road. That's when police went to Giles' home and took him into custody.

Police say Giles confessed. Police believe Giles may have been drinking prior to the shooting but they don't know what his blood alcohol level was when the shooting occurred. They did not give him a blood alcohol test because he has not been charged with any alcohol-related crimes.

Captain Thomas Hunt with Moody police says Giles is being held on no bond.
