MOODY, AL (WBRC) -

Moody police say a Brompton man randomly shot at passing cars while sitting on his four wheeler at a gas station Tuesday night.

Matthew Giles, 19, is charged with two counts of shooting into an occupied vehicle, a class B felony.

The incident started around 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Chevron on Highway 78 near the Brompton exit off Interstate 20.

At least two cars were damaged by the flying bullets. One of the drivers, named Murray Scroggins, says he heard gunshots as he approached a stop sign, then saw the shooter standing on the side of the road. Scroggins says the bullet that struck his car hit the drivers' side, close to his head.

Moody and Odenville police, along with St. Clair County sheriff's deputies, used search dogs during a four-hour manhunt Monday night.

As authorities were searching, a witness stopped at the gas station and told police earlier in the evening he saw Giles on his four wheeler sitting on the side of the road. That's when police went to Giles' home and took him into custody.

Police say Giles confessed. Police believe Giles may have been drinking prior to the shooting but they don't know what his blood alcohol level was when the shooting occurred.

Police say the charges against Giles may be bumped up to attempted murder depending on what the grand jury decides.
