BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The partner of slain Birmingham Police officer Joseph Daniels is speaking out about the arrest of the man accused in Daniels' murder.

Wednesday, the Birmingham Police Department announced 31-year-old Adam Bradford, a current inmate at the St. Clair Correctional Facility, has been charged with the Nov. 18, 2002 murder.

"I jumped for joy. I was with a group of people when I got the news. His sister called me. I shouted out loud," Officer Lawrence Billups said.

Billups was Daniels' partner on the force at the time. Billups says investigators knew Bradford was a suspect but it took time to build a case. Billups says the arrest does not ease the pain of losing a friend and partner but it's a balm for all of those who cared for Daniels.

"Just knowing he didn't die in vain. Knowing....he went out saving people. You know, he went out doing what he had to do to save another life," Billups said.

It's been a long wait for the family and friends of Daniels to have someone charged with his murder. While the wait of a trial may take a toll on those connected with Daniels, Billups says this is a huge step closer to closure.

"When they got that news man it up lifted the whole precinct. He was a member of our family. Even thought we are not blood, we are still family," Billups said.
