BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

A Birmingham police officer has been accused in the string of Ensley arsons, multiple sources tell Fox 6 News.

The Birmingham Police Department obtained warrants against the officer just before noon on Friday, May 25. Sources say the officer is a west precinct officer with the Birmingham police.

Multiple sources say the person being detained and questioned in connection to the Ensley arsons was also wanted for questioning in a possible arson in Warrior. It is not yet clear whether the warrants obtained against the officer are for the Ensley arsons or the possible Warrior arson.

Fire investigators have been looking for a suspect in the 12 fires set in west Birmingham since May 9. Investigators say there were three things connecting all of the fires. All of the fires were set in a similar area, mostly in the Ensley community. The fires were set during the early morning hours, usually between midnight and 7 a.m. All of the Ensley fires were also set to vacant homes.

Two additional house fires reported in Ensley early Friday morning are not believed to be connected to the string of arsons. One of the fires is believed to be a kitchen fire. Investigators think the other fire was intentionally set, but was part of a witness intimidation case unrelated to the 12 Ensley arsons.

There will be a news conference at 3 p.m. today where more information is expected to be released. Fox 6 will carry the news conference live and stream it online at www.FoxAlabamaLive.com and on the Fox 6 mobile app.
