Mother of teen accused of killing his girlfriend speaks out

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Pamela Brantley says that her son did not intentionally shoot  Kayla Castro. Brantley says on Saturday night the sawed-off 12-gauge shotgun was returned to her son by a friend. When he went to put the gun in his room it went off, killing his 16-year-old girlfriend Kayla.

"He ran out of the door he said ‘I didn't mean it, I didn't mean it'," said Brantley. "If my son meant to kill that girl he would have never turned himself in."

Late Saturday night Pamela's son was charged with murder. Monday, she was calling for him to be set free.

Her family says there is no way the young man they called Benny, would have purposely gunned down the woman he had planned to marry.

"I loved Kayla and we all loved her. I know my brother would never ever hurt her purposely, he really loved her really. He wanted to be with her for the rest of his life," says his brother.  They considered Kayla part of their family.

"Benny and Kayla were so in love, and Zee her mother is with us every step of the way, we are still a tight family."

Brantley says the family won't be broken, but will be brought closer together during these difficult times.  She says her family and Kayla Castro's family are hoping for the best outcome, because everyone who knows Benjamin and Kayla understands that her son lost the love of his life.

"My son didn't mean to kill that girl and look they got him locked up. In there looking like he is a total murderer, he's not a murderer," Brantley said.

News leader 9 spoke with Valerie Fuller with Muscogee County School District and she says that grief councilors will be on hand at Hardaway High School if they are needed.

Brantley is expected to appear in Recorder's Court Tuesday morning.
