HOOVER, Ala. – The UAB Blazers got a two-out RBI single by John Frost in the bottom of the 12th inning to post a 1-0 win over the Alabama baseball team on Tuesday night from Regions Park. The loss drops the Crimson Tide to 9-16 overall, while the Blazers improve to 17-9.
In the 12th, Ivan De Jesus drew a two-out walk off Nathan Kennedy, then stole second on the next pitch to move into scoring position. Frost delivered the game's only run on a single to right center field on a 1-1 offering by Kennedy. With the loss, Kennedy falls to 0-1 on the season. The benefactor of the win was Jacob German (3-0), who pitched a perfect 12th inning for UAB.
Trey Pilkington had a career outing for the Crimson Tide, as he took a no-hitter into the seventh inning. Pilkington, who did not factor into the decision, threw a career-high 7.0 innings, allowing two hits (both in the seventh) with a career-high eight strikeouts and one walk. He did not surrender a hit until there was one out on the seventh.
"Trey Pilkington was outstanding tonight," UA head coach Mitch Gaspard said. "We got another quality start, it was our fourth in a row, Jake Hubbard was good out of the pen and I thought Nate Kennedy did a nice job as well. From a pitching and defensive side, we played the game well enough to win tonight."
Alabama was able to put seven hits together against UAB starting pitcher Tanner Bryant, through four innings, but the Crimson Tide could not push any of its 11 base runners through five innings across the plate. UA had a runner picked off, another caught stealing and another thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double.
"The offensive struggles continue," Gaspard said. "I thought we were good in the early part of the game and we had a good aggressive approach. We missed on to many opportunities and couldn't get the big hit. When you go 12 innings and you don't score, you're missing some offensive pressure along the way."
The Tide left two runners on base in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings, before not getting a base runner until there was one out in the eighth. UAB had runners on first and second in the seventh and ninth, a runner on third in the eighth.
Alabama out-hit UAB 10-6 in the game, as Ben Moore and Jared Reaves had two hits each to lead the Tide, while six other players tallied one hit each. Taylor Dugas was 1-for-5 and Jon Kelton was 1-for-4 and each player was hit by a pitch.
The Crimson Tide returns to Southeastern Conference play with three games at Tennessee this weekend. The Tide and Vols start the series on Friday night with first pitch at 5 p.m. (CDT), from Lindsey Nelson Stadium. Game two is scheduled for noon CDT on Saturday and will be televised on CSS, and the series finale will begin at 1 p.m., Sunday.
