Tusacloosa, Ala. – Following a three-game series sweep of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Alabama freshman catcher Ben Moore (Cullman, Ala.) was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week on Monday. Moore started all three games behind the plate for the Crimson Tide, posted a .571 batting average and threw out two base runners in the series.
A true freshman, Moore finished his first full weekend as the Tide's starting catcher with a .571 batting average (4-for-7), a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .692 on-base percentage, reaching base in 9-of-13 trips to the plate. He tied for the team lead with five RBI and led the team with six runs scored.
Moore clubbed his first career home run in the eighth inning in the series opener, a three-run bomb to left field with two outs. He also, walked earlier in the same inning and scored twice in the frame, helping the Tide to an 8-run eighth. Additionally, he threw out two base runners attempting to steal and had a sacrifice fly RBI.
In six games this season, Moore's appeared in the starting line-up five times (four at catcher, once in right field), while playing in all six games. He is second on the team with a .375 batting average, has a .625 slugging percentage and a .522 on-base percentage. He leads the team with eight runs scored, is second with five RBI and has one double and one home run on the year.
Alabama returns to the diamond on Tuesday night when it hosts South Alabama in the final game of a seven-game homestand to open the season. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. (CST), from Sewell-Thomas Stadium. UA plays its first road game of the season on Wednesday, when it travels to Hattiesburg, Miss., to take on Southern Mississippi at 4 p.m.
